The Devils joined the NHL in 1967 as the Kansas City Scouts, had a brief stint in Denver as the Colorado Rockies, before finally relocating to New Jersey in 1982. A fan contest and vote selected the club's name as the Devils after a creature believed to have roamed the Pine Barrens in the southern part of the state.
